The Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw upright freezer can trace its roots all the way back to 1919 when one of the founders of General Motors started the company in Indiana. Frigidaire became a household name in the United States. Most people called a refrigerator a “Frigidaire” until the 1960s. Then the European appliance giant Electrolux bought the company in 1979, and it’s been a German subsidiary ever since.

Specifications

If Frigidaire is an established company with a long history, then the Fffu14M1Qw is part of that heritage. This upright freezer joined Frigidaire’s lineup in 2015. Because of its attractive price, the freezer is still a strong seller today. It features 14.4 cubic feet of space that’s organized by five wire shelves. Also, this fridge features thick “Arctic Lock” walls that can keep contents frozen for up to two days during a power outage. There’s also an internal temperature-control dial.

Another feature the Fffu14M1Qw has is a pop-out key and a power-on indicator light, a white door gasket, and bright internal lighting. There are no rollers, no air ports, and no ice maker. This is a barebones freezer with one goal: to freeze your food.

  • Height: 61 3/4 inches
  • Width: 29 5/8 inches
  • Depth (with door): 30 inches

Warranty

It comes with Frigidaire’s standard one-year major appliance warranty. This warranty will cover the repair or replacement of any parts that become defective, although they don’t cover transportation or inspection should you require such measures.

Another great thing about this freezer is that you can find it at most major retailers. Home Depot, Amazon, AJ Madison, and others carry the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw.

How We Created This Review

To make this a fair and unbiased review of the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw we checked out multiple sources. First, we read what Frigidaire had to say about their own product. Then we went to the top reviewers in the industry at Consumer Reports. Finally, we read through customer reviews at Home Depot and Amazon. Because we love to hear real people’s experiences with products, we read through a lot of them.

Finally, we compared the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw to the competition to see how well it stacks up.

  • ArcticLock Thicker Walls: Keeps food frozen for over 2 days if there is a power outage.
  • Energy Efficient: Over 24% more energy efficient than Frigidaire's 2013 models

First off, reviews of the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw were mixed. The professional reviewers at Consumer Reports loved this freezer, while customer reviews on both Home Depot and Amazon were reasonably consistent.

Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports rated the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw “Excellent” for a barebones upright freezer. They praised its everyday practicality, and they enjoyed its temperature uniformity. The freezer even kept food frozen beyond its guaranteed two days with no power, which really impressed the testers.

Home Depot Customers

In the same way that Consumer Reports engineers praised the Fffu14M1Qw, customers at Home Depot raved about it.  It’s also more energy efficient than a lot of other freezers, something customers enjoyed. On the other hand, several customers complained that the freezer is very noisy.

Amazon Customers

Likewise, Amazon customers had many of the same thoughts as Home Depot customers. Again, customers enjoyed that it froze food and kept it frozen. Unfortunately, the noisiness disturbed every reviewer, and one reviewer came back after six months and wrote that they had to defrost the freezer several times manually.

How the Fffu14M1Qw Compares to Other Upright Freezers

If this is a 2015 model freezer and doesn’t do much else aside from freeze food, what does the competition have to offer? Now that we know from customer reviews how noisy the Fffu14M1Qw can be, there could be an upright freezer that runs quieter.

For one thing, Kenmore, GE, Maytag, and Whirlpool all make comparable freezers. Are they as reasonably priced, and can they stay quiet? Also, do any of these have features the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw lacks, such as automatic defrost?

Kenmore Elite 27002 20.5 cu. ft. Upright Freezer in White, includes...
  • Item includes room of choice delivery, unboxing, item hook-up and free optional haul-away at checkout
  • Freeze Fresh Technology freezes food at -20 degrees to help lock in freshness and nutrients. Frost-free design means you...
  • Soft freeze zone is perfect for storing softer frozen goods like ice cream

First up in our comparison is the Kenmore Elite 27002 upright freezer. Kenmore is a Sears brand which debuted with a sewing machine in 1913. By 1932, the brand had vacuum cleaners, radios, and refrigerators in its lineup. Which brings us to today, and Kenmore’s varied line of home appliances sold exclusively through Sears and Amazon.

The Kenmore Elite 27002 upright freezer features 18 cubic feet of internal storage. It is roomier than the Fffu14M1Qw. Also, it deep freezes food up to -20 degrees which helps lock in freshness, and it maintains a soft-freeze zone for items such as ice cream. The freezer is rated frost-free, so you’ll never have to defrost the freezer manually. It is 73-inches tall and 30-inches wide, so it’s a little larger than the Frigidaire.

General Electric 14.1 cu f frost-free upright freezer

GE FUF14DLRWW Upright Freezer
  • Interior LED lighting lets you see everything clearly so it's easier to find
  • Electronic external temperature control make adjusting the settings quick and simple
  • Lock and key deter thieves or unauthorized persons from accessing your frozen food

Next up in the comparison is the General Electric FUF14SMRWW upright freezer. General Electric is on Fortune 500’s list of the biggest companies in the world. However, the company traces its roots all the way back to 1889, when Thomas Edison received funding from JP Morgan and the Vanderbilts to start up. General Electric has the honor of being one of the first 12 companies listed on the Dow Jones exchange when it began in 1896.

Which brings us to the General Electric 14.1 cubic foot freezer. This upright freezer is almost the same size as the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw but comes with more bells and whistles. For instance, it features an audible temperature alarm, internal LED lighting, and exterior temperature controls. Also, it’s frost free, so you never have to worry about defrosting and draining it. This freezer has a limited 1-year warranty.

Because at the time of writing Consumer Reports has not yet completed a review of this freezer, we couldn’t determine what they thought of the freezer. However, more than 200 Home Depot customers were happy to write reviews. Most people praised how whisper-quiet the unit runs, and others loved how quickly it freezes food. Several people did have complaints that the digital temperature controls short out and shut the entire freezer down. This happened more than once, so it is potentially a serious glitch in the freezer.

Maytag MZF34X16DW

Next in our comparison is the Maytag upright freezer. Maytag started in Iowa as a washing machine company in 1893. During the Great Depression Maytag was one of the only consumer appliance manufacturers to stay in operation, employing nearly 10,000 workers in a time with rampant unemployment and poverty. During World War II Maytag expanded to over 100,000 workers in 30 plants across the U.S., making components for the U.S. war effort. Eventually, the company was purchased by Whirlpool, who owns them today.

And that brings us to this Maytag MZF34X16DW freezer, which features 15.7 cubic feet of storage space with three adjustable wireframes. There’s also a floor shelf with a storage gate, perfect for keeping turkeys and hams safe. This freezer has a “FastFreeze” function which can drop the temperature to -30 degrees for up to 24 hours to lock in freshness. This is great for when you’ve just added a bunch of new meat that requires freezing. Finally, this freezer is frost-free. It has a awesome 10-year warranty.

They praised the consistency of the temperature and claimed that 15.7 cubic feet hits the sweet spot for storage space. They loved how much storage space this freezer provided without taking up too much more room than a 14-cubic foot freezer. It runs quiet and is relatively easy to clean. Unfortunately, there did seem to be a problem with the freezer breaking down at the 100-day mark. Thankfully, the 10-year warranty is there.

Whirlpool WZF56R16DW freezer

Lastly, we have the Whirlpool WZF56R16DW freezer. The Whirlpool Corporation is one of the largest manufacturers of home appliances in North America. They’re from Michigan, and they produce everything at factories in the United States. Although today they make all sorts of home gadgets, when they began in 1911 they were focused on washing machines. From the start, Whirlpool was innovative, being the first to add an electric motor to a washing machine and then creating the tumbler dryer that could fit in people’s homes.

Like the Maytag freezer, the Whirlpool WZF56R16DW freezer has 15.7 cubic feet of storage space. Also, it has a fast-freeze function and LED internal lighting. It features five full-width door bins and three wire shelves to organize food. Best of all, it’s frost free, so you never have to worry about defrosting it. This unit comes with Whirlpool’s standard 1-year parts warranty.

Like the General Electric freezer we looked at, there were no Consumer Reports reviews of this Whirlpool freezer. Also, this freezer isn’t available on Amazon, so that leaves us with our trusty Home Depot customer reviewers. When it comes to noise, the freezer is somewhat loud, but nothing like the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw. Several people found the freezer a little too bulky and said it takes up a lot more room than other 15 cubic foot freezers.

Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw Strengths and Weaknesses

There was a lot of disparity in the reviews of the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw. This is quite often indicative of a lower-quality product. While every product will have its detractors, it’s when we start to see as many complaints as positive reviews that we begin to worry. Let’s take one last look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw.

Strengths

  • Great price
  • Nice size fits almost anywhere
  • From an established brand
  • Does its job simply and reliably
  • Keeps food frozen for more than 48 hours without power

Weaknesses

  • No bells or whistles
  • Runs very loudly
  • No frost-free capabilities
  • It’s a pain to defrost and drain every few months
  • Weak one-year warranty doesn’t cover much

Our Final Thoughts

The Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw has a great price. It’s one of the most affordable upright freezers on the market, and you get a decent 14 cubic feet of space with which to play. It’s lack of bells and whistles, such as computerized digital displays or fancy LED lighting, makes it barebones but also means nothing gets in the way of freezing food and keeping it frozen.

But that’s where we stop being impressed by the Frigidaire Fffu14M1Qw, and start to look at what we consider the best-in-class freezer on the market. The Maytag MZF34X16DW freezer is only slightly more expensive than the Frigidaire and does so much more. It’s a little larger but runs quieter, has better-organized space, and is one of the most highly-reviewed freezers on the market. Best of all, it comes with a fantastic 10-year warranty. That alone makes it better than the Frigidaire. We highly suggest passing on the Frigidaire and getting the Maytag instead.
